Investing in students — with Pave’s Oren Bass
What do you get when you put the college debt problem together with crowdfunding?
An entirely new investable asset, that’s what.
Oren Bass, co-founder of Pave.com, joins be to talk about how crowdfunding has created an entirely new type of investment: people. Instead of shouldering hundreds of thousands of dollars of student debt early in their career, some forward-looking students have turned to Pave to raise money via a human-capital contract.
It’s this contract investors can invest in, providing them with a socially-responsible activity along with a return on their money.
This isn’t passive indexing. Let’s dive in and learn more.

Tradestreaming Hedge Fund Guru Portfolio continues to outperform
Well, my Tradestreaming Hedge Fund rebalanced last week. The portfolio (access details here) is up almost 20% YTD, handily beating the S&P500 which is up a bit over 12% on the year.
I sold $MIC and $PCLN, two stocks that I’ve owned for the bulk of 2012. $MIC was a big winner and $PCLN had been as well, until it gave back much of its gains in August.
So far in 2012, I’ve made 17 trades. The portfolio is based upon the research I published in Tradestream Your Way to Profits and mimics certain strategies of 12 top hedge fund managers. It’s not as simple as merely aping top hedge funds’ trading — certain hedge funds replicate differently than others.
For example, investors may begin to approximate Warren Buffett’s returns by buying his largest holding while Pershing Square’s Bill Ackman may replicate best by buying his newest holding.
Anyway, couple more details about the Tradestreaming Hedge Fund Guru Portfolio
- 70.6% of trades profitable
- 0.622 correlation with S&P500
- Sharpe Ratio of 1.743

But with the need to get uncorrelated diversification and a hot rarity market, retail investors haven’t given up. And now, Liquid Rarity Exchange has found a way to securitize rarities so that the other 99% of us can invest in them.
With technology and patented-processes, LRE can take real assets and make stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, or derivatives out of them. LRE’s COO, Susan Carpenter joins me on Tradestreaming Radio to discuss the market for collectibles, her firm’s process and technology and where rarity investing is headed.
