From setting up a de facto mobile banking system in Africa to helping more SMBs access lines of credit to letting us pay our friends for free or crowdfund for good causes, fintech is driving change in a big way.
What it’s not doing, however, is serving as a meme muse.
We found this out the hard way in our search for the top five fintech memes. The first red flag popped up fairly early in researching the article:

A search on thechive.com came up similarly empty:

Cheezburger’s “Know your Meme” did not know of any fintech memes, either:

More specific fintech terms, P2P, online lending, and insurtech, yielded similar results. The search for a mobile banking meme came up with one meme, but it wasn’t particularly funny.
And while the humorous Twitter account Wu-Tang financial uses memes to great effect, they’re not memes that are specifically about fintech.

Banks, who have ventured out of their comfort zones with emoji and Snapchat endeavors, have yet to take up the meme gauntlet. Perhaps more surprising, however, is that the spring chickens of the finance, fintech companies, have yet to make themselves at home with memes. Whatever the reasons for this dearth of fintech memes, it looks like the “top 5 fintech memes” won’t be a thing for quite some time.
